Analysis of n-dimensional Quadtrees Using the Hausdor Fractal Dimension

چکیده
There is mounting evidence Man77, Sch91] that real datasets are statistically self-similar, and thus, `fractal'. This is an important insight since it permits a compact statistical description of spatial datasets; subsequently, as we show, it also forms the basis for the theoretical analysis of spatial access methods, without using the typical, but unrealistic, uniformity assumption. In this paper, we focus on the estimation of the number of quadtree blocks that a real, spatial dataset will require. Using the the well-known Hausdorr fractal dimension, we derive some closed formulas which allow us to predict the number of quadtree blocks, given some few parameters. Using our formulas, it is possible to predict the space overhead and the response time of linear quadtrees/z-ordering OM88], which are widely used in practice. In order to verify our analytical model, we performed an extensive experimental investigation using several real datasets coming from diierent domains. In these experiments, we found that our analytical model agrees well with our experiments as well as with older empirical observations on 2-d Gae95b] and 3-d ACF + 94] data.

1. Uni ed eld theories suggest a N dimensional conguration space with N̄ = N−4 > 0 extra dimensions not perceived in nature. The common heuristic reasons for this proposition are: (i) the volume [Hausdor measure] does not scale like μH(δ,R ) = δ μH(1,R ), where δ is some length scale and 1 stands for its unity. Instead, experience tells us that increasing (or decreasing) the spacial size of an o...

Fractal Brownian motions have been introduced as a statistical description of natural images. We analyze the Gaussian scale-space scaling of derivatives of fractal images. On the basis of this analysis we propose a method for estimation of the fractal dimension of images and scale-space normalisation used in conjunction with automatic scale selection assuming either constant energy over scale o...

Introduction: Many natural phenomena have many variables that make it difficult to find relationships between them using common mathematical methods. This problem, along with the impossibility of measuring all elements of nature, has led to a major evolution in the way of understanding and explaining phenomena. In this way, one can use the fractal geometry with the theory that many natural phen...

We characterize the coordinate functions of Hilbert's spacelling curve using a directed-graph iterated function system and use this to analyze their fractal properties. In particular, we show that both coordinate functions have graphs of Hausdor dimension 3 2 and level sets of dimension 1 2 .

Nature is lled with examples of phenomena that exhibit seemingly chaotic behavior, such as air turbulence, forest res and the like. However, under this behavior it is almost always possible to nd self-similarity, i.e. an invariance with respect to the scale used. The structures that appear as a consequence of self-similarity are known as fractals [12]. Fractals have been used in numerous discip...
